1. What is your background and experience in the beauty industry?

I hold a dual license in skincare and cosmetology. English was a second language for me, so I wanted to be both cautious and practical when choosing a career path. I chose cosmetology, earning a vocational degree vs academic. After graduating, I continued to pursue advanced education for skincare, as well as the art and science of make-up and hair color. I keep up with the latest styles and techniques because I enjoy bringing hair to life. In the end, it turned out to be one of the best decisions I could have ever made for myself. I love every aspect of the beauty industry; it gives me a creative platform on which to excel.

2. What has been most rewarding for you?

Having the opportunity to do what I love most each day and calling it a career. Building relations, being creative and delivering predictable and consistent results; it’s an environment I thrive in. Beauty does not end at the hairline; a good skincare regimen and make-up that brings out one’s best features, go hand and hand with eye-catching hair transformations. When a new customer walks into my salon for the first time, I instinctively begin visualizing a certain look that would work best for them based on facial features, skin tone and hair texture. Then, after learning a bit more about the customer’s lifestyle, expectations, fashion sense and budget, I make recommendations. It is so gratifying to bring this vision into reality and then watch my client’s eyes light up when they look in the mirror to see the stunning transformation.

3. How would you describe your typical day?

I always feel energized throughout my day knowing that I get to be creative and execute exceptional results regardless of the task at hand; whether I’m doing hair, make-up or skincare. It’s not a job; it’s more like a hobby. I get to be an artist and my clients are my canvass! I’m creating art! And ever now and again, a masterpiece!

4. Favorite makeover and why?

There are many, but what first comes to mind is a particular morning several years ago when a new client had unexpectedly walked into my salon. She was sobbing and in desperate need for same-day services involving corrective hair color. She had attempted to bleach her hair at home using a highlighting cap; it left the top half of her hair bleached and the bottom half untouched. She was too embarrassed to be seen in public or go to work until it was corrected. I had a full schedule ahead of me but wanted to accommodate her, so asked if she minded if I formulated a treatment plan for her in between appointments. She said yes and was so relieved and apologetic to my customers for interrupting their scheduled appointments. She ended up graciously waiting a total of 4 hours to be treated between appointments, but in the end, was thrilled with the results and remained a customer for 25 years.

5. Most challenging hair transformation?

Corrective hair color service! Whether it’s an at-home hair color gone awry, or an inexperienced colorist at a salon, if left in the wrong hands a bad treatment can damage your hair and correcting it can be challenging. Since the products used in the original service, gone wrong, are unknown, it is often trial and error to correct without further damaging the hair. Delivering exceptional results while preserving, or even improving, hair health, requires adding or subtracting from a color formula. Understanding chemistry is a must to mix primary colors, secondary and even tertiary colors, all while removing the unwanted color and leaving the desired color as an end result!

6. What advice do you have for those searching for a master stylist and keeping costs and results balanced?

My advice is simple! I do not believe you always get what you pay for; but you can be sure, you never get more that you pay for!! Delivering predictable, consistent results requires proper training, experience, and knowledge in both chemistry and hair coloring techniques. If cost is your only consideration, most likely you are going to consistently get less than desired results. And, if you must have a professional correct your color, it will cost you more than if you just went to that professional first! When looking for a new hair color, there are several things to consider. Like your natural hair color, your skin tone, lifestyle, wardrobe and make-up, and hair condition, and YES budget may be important. You need to consider all of these when determining whether your expectations are realistic. For instance, if you’re wanting to go platinum blonde, and that would be more than 3 levels on the color wheel, it should be done with tremendous care and ideally, over multiple visits to maintain healthy hair. Your colorist may need 6 months or longer for more dramatic changes in order to preserve healthy hair. Experience, quality and consistency of service should weigh heavily over cost alone when choosing a stylist. We all know what it’s like to have a bad hair day, so why trust your hair to just anyone?
